Herbs for ankylosing spondylitis
Hi James,

My nephew in brazil has a condition and I was hoping you could suggest some herbs/formulation to help him out.

He’s been diagnosed with something called: “ankylosing spondylitis”. I guess it causes chronic back pain, stiffness, difficulty with stretching and elasticity, fatigue and says it wakes him up at night with pain.

He started taking something called: adalimumab (injections). He says it helps him about 80%, but is looking for anything else to help out.

I figured perhaps you would have a few suggestions?

Thanks!

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is believed to be possibly autoimmune in nature. Autoimmune disorders are most often triggered by pathogens and involve adrenal dysfunction. The adrenal dysfunction leads to the over production of low affinity antibodies that can target healthy tissue for destruction. Here is an old write up on autoimmunity:

I recommend focusing primarily on strengthening the adrenals, which if nothing else will help reduce the inflammatory component of this disease:

I also recommend high dose full range antimicrobial herbs such as chaparral, pau d' arco, andrographis, licorice root, etc. for several months.

Trying to rebuild after the joint damage should wait for a few months until the immune system is back in line.

Thanks James! I will pass this along and then post back with any follow-ups or notes on results.
