Elevating ATP for heart health
CoQ10 works by increasing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels in the heart. Without sufficient ATP levels in muscles, such as the heart, the muscles do not function properly and start to deteriorate. For example, the cholesterol lowering statin drugs are well known for causing a condition known as rhabdomyolosis, which is muscle tissue breakdown. The reason this occurs is that the statins lower CoQ10 levels, which in turn reduces muscle ATP levels. This is why when you listen to the commercials about statins they say if you experience muscle pain consult your doctor. What they don't say is that the heart is also a muscle and prone to deterioration by statins. Therefore, another well known side effect of statin drugs is heart failure. Also the reason that if people are taking statins that they also take COQ10 to prevent statin induced heart failure.

Other supplements also raise ATP levels including magnesium, malic acid and the amino acid carnitine. I prefer magnesium malate since it provides both the magnesium and the malic acid both for ATP formation. Magnesium malate also increases blood flow to the heart increasing oxygen levels, which in turn also elevates ATP production.
