It looks like there may actually be something to the use of maple syrup as a cancer cure, if this study is reliable. Many in the alternative health circles use maple syrup in combination with another anti-cancer, most usually baking soda, and claim that it is effective in eradicating tumors and cancer. A probably better combination might be maple syrup plus chaparral and pau d' arco.
If you read the actual study it needs to be taken with a grain of salt, or in this case sugar.
First of all these studies are done in a Petri dish using cell lines, not in an actual body with a metabolism.
The author of the blog article overlooked some important points such as where in the study it also states:
"High concentrations of sucrose significantly inhibited the growth of the CRC cell lines (Fig. 1). This result suggests that the high concentration (10%) of sucrose in maple syrup has cytotoxic effects due to high osmotic pressure."
The osmotic shift is the same principle in which concentrated sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) injections kill cancer cells and healthy cells. When concentrated sucrose or sodium bicarbonate are ingested this is far from the same thing. Ingested sucrose and sodium bicarbonate cannot reach most tumors intact. Sucrose has to be broken enzymatically in to glucose and fructose for these sugars to be absorbed. from there they can be used for energy, converted to glycogen or simply not absorbed and eliminated meaning concentrations will be far lower preventing the osmotic shift. And the absorbed sugars will be highly diluted in the blood further reducing the possibility of an osmotic shift on any cancer cells. Ingested baking soda is simply neutralized by the stomach acid and therefore does not reach the bloodstream intact. Even if enough is ingested to dangerously overwhelm the stomach acid it would still be too dilute in the bloodstream to have any effect on killing cancer cells by osmosis. And since cancer cells are already more alkaline than healthy cells the cancer cells will not be killed by a pH shift either even if a pH change could occur. See my articles on this under Health Fraud.
There are some compounds in the maple syrup that will have anti-cancer properties such as anti-viral phenols. Most cancers result from viruses. But again there is no evidence that ingesting the maple syrup will provide sufficient levels to have this effect and especially without feeding the cancer with all the sugar.
That is why in the study they also say that more research is needed.
