Osteoporosis
Hi Hveragerthi,

My mother suffers from Osteoporosis. She is 62 years old. We are from Bulgaria and the doctors here prescribed her Bonviva 150mg (Ibandronic acid) once a month. Her lab test T-score: -3,65.

I've read your treatment protocol for Osteoporosis. Could you recommend us concrete supplements and brands?

There are a lot of sillica supplements on iHerb.com but I wonder which one we should buy? http://www.iherb.com/search?kw=silica&x=-3&y=-4#p=1 All of them are prepared from Horsetail. Is that bad?

Is it a good idea eating dried nettle leaves with tea?

Thank you Hveragerthi!

RE: Osteoporosis
Hi James,

I hope that everything is going well for you.
My friend has osteoporosis and was prescribed with Boniva. She took only twice, once per month and got bed ridden for a month. The condition has improved as time goes on but there are days that she is confined in bed because of the pain. Her whole bone structure hurt and she could not move. It was a gradual pain but after the second dose, it was intolerable. To give you an idea, it takes her 2 hours to get the bathroom with some morphine. Her movements were very restricted, she could barely move her head from one side to another.
Is there anything to do to get the medicine out of her system? Is there anything to help her to recover faster. She lost over 10 pounds and now is under 100lbs.

Thank you and best wishes,

Nancy

You should search it in the old forum until James can answer. He might have written about it there:

Hi Nancy,

The best source of silica is food grade diatomaceous earth. It can be added to water so a little of the silica dissolves in the water. Let the DE settle out then pour off the water above the sediment to drink:

http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1874911#i

I don't like horsetail grass (shavegrass) because it constricts blood vessels, which is not safe in some individuals such as those with diabetes, heart disease, who are using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, etc. Here is more information:

http://www.medcapsules.com/info/Silica_D...0Grass.htm

If you want an herbal source of silica then bamboo stalk is the best. It is 7 times higher in silica than horsetail grass and dilates blood vessels.

There is a common myth that osteoporosis is a loss of bone minerals. Osteoporosis is actually a loss of collagen matrix of the bone, which reduces mineral binding sites. Loss of minerals from bone are osteomalacia and osteopenia, not osteoporosis.

Bisphosphonate drugs such as Boniva do not address the collagen loss. Furthermore, these drugs actually increase the risk of fracture by leading to the formation of very poor quality bone in large part by inhibiting proper bone remodeling and from over-mineralization leading to decreased shock absorbing flexibility. To make matters worse, once in the body it takes about 10 years to get these dangerous drugs back out of the body.

Other potential side effects of these drugs include osteonecrosis of the jawbone and a burning sensation in the body that can become permanent.

Nettle leaf is a good source of silica and vitamin C, both which build bone collagen. It is best taken as a powder or in capsules since making a tea or using a tincture will reduce both silica and vitamin C levels. The tea is delicious though and can be drunk as well.

There is a lot of information in my last post. Silica and vitamin C are the most important nutrients needed to support the bones.

The amino acid DL-phenylalanine (DLPA) is great for pain relief and can be used to wean off of pain medications. I recommend 1g three times daily at least 30 minutes before meals. It takes about 2 weeks to build up so pain medications should not be reduced until then. DLPA works by increasing the body's production of dopamine, the body's natural pain killer.

I don't think there is any way to speed up getting the drug back out of the body. The bones have to go through a remodeling process to get rid of these types of drugs. But bisphosphonate drugs, like Boniva, kill the osteoclast cells of bone required for proper bone remodeling.

RE: Osteoporosis
Thanks Hveragerthi!

I'm thinking of buying a bamboo extract and nettle leaf extract capsules. Will these cure my mother's osteoporosis? Should she stop taking Bonviva?

I couldn't find bamboo stalk on iherb and in Bulgaria.

I have found some bamboo supplements containing silica on ebay and amazon:

1) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bamboo-Extract-3...boo+silica ------ my choice

2) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Enerex-Bamboo-...5af316f860

3) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bamboo-Extract...4ac5739788

4) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Power-Health-O...53fddc1b2d

Silica is above 100 mg per capsule/tablet. Isn't that too much?

It was easier for me to find Nettle leaf capsules than bamboo:

1) http://www.iherb.com/Nature-s-Way-Nettle...sules/2030

2) http://www.iherb.com/Planetary-Herbals-F...blets/1560

There are a lot of supplements and I find it difficult to make a good choice. Sad

Hi James,
Thank you for your prompt and thorough reply and for the most helpful advices.Big Grin
When you say that bisphosphonate drugs, like Boniva, kill the osteoclast cells of bone required for proper bone remodeling do you mean that only some osteoclast cells were killed but not all of them, though there is a possibility that all were killed and there will be no chance of recovery?ConfusedHuh

Silica and vitamin C sources are the best treatment for osteoporosis. These help with restoring the bone collagen lost in osteoporosis.

Should she stop taking Bonviva?

I cannot tell her to stop taking the Boniva, but I will say that Boniva does not correct osteoporosis and is a very dangerous drug. Boniva can increase the risk of bone fractures and can cause a burning sensation in the body that in some cases can become permanent. These types of drugs take about 10 years to get back out of the system.

A high amount of silica is not going to hurt. Silica is very poorly absorbed so the excess is simply eliminated from the body. That is why my favorite way to take silica is by adding diatomaceous earth to water so that each time you take a drink a little silica is absorbed. Bamboo is a good source of silica and also helps in cases of high blood pressure or poor circulation since it dilates blood vessels.

It was easier for me to find Nettle leaf capsules than bamboo:

Nettle leaf is a good source of silica and vitamin C and provides various other nutrients. It also supports the thyroid, adrenals, liver and kidneys.

RE: Osteoporosis
Hello again Hveragerthi,

I bought Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade from UK 5 days ago - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Diatomaceous-Ear...eous+Earth

I have few questions:

1) So now I have to put 1 tablespoon DE powder in a 3-liter jug ? Isn't that too little, Hveragerthi?

2) How much time DE powder have to stay in the jug so my mother can drink from the water?

3) How much glasses of water she should drink per day?

4) Do I have to pour the DE powder with mineral water?

Thanks a lot!
